Image data are selected for a project based on information the client wishes to map, the extent of the project area, the desired mapping scale, and availability. Aerial photography, panchromatic or multispectral satellite imagery at a variety of resolutions from 1 foot to 100 meters are employed. Typical sources include Landsat, SPOT, IRS. IKONOS, Quickbird, Orbview, and Radarsat.
Images are enhanced through processing to facilitate interpretation and feature extraction or processed to derive discrete land cover classes. Image products also can be used as a base layer in a GIS project. Georectified imagery assures accurate spatial reference.
